Poor diaphragmatic breathing is one of the greatest missed opportunities for healthy skeletal alignment that I see. And it is so remarkably common. When this primary breathing muscle contracts to draw air in to your body, it's inherent capacity is to create broad (and stabilizing) expansion of the ribcage.
When I assess most people's breathing pattern, this fullness is not what I see. There tends to be asymmetric or collapsed movement in the circumference of the breath. There are restrictions that change the entire mechanics of the spine and all that extends from it. Effectively, whole body alignment is negatively impacted by rapid and dysfunctional breathing.
And...rapid and dysfunctional breathing results from a body and mind in fight or flight. We generally don't realize how our emotional countenance effects the behavior of our physical form. Yet, if you were to draw your attention to how you were born to breath and feel how that's not happening within you, it would get your attention.
It can be so illuminating to see how you when you engage a diaphragmatic inhale, it can align you from center outward. You can lengthen your spine, balance your hip stabilizers, open up in to shoulder alignment and also access the present moment where feelings of safety signal the nervous system that all is well.
The path to this is not easy, but it's a practice that can create profound, positive and permanent changes.
