We live inside, we work on computers and many people don't have access to adequate sunshine on a daily basis. So many people are accustomed to their inside environment, that they forget that we started out living among the trees, on the elemental earth and gazing up at the sky. It's fundamental to our health as animals.
Our lack of sun exposure impacts our serotonin levels and the downward cascade from this crucial neurotransmitter. The lack of being in physical contact with the earths elements is a missed opportunity to reduce our inflammation. And certain plants give off phytochemicals that can positively regulate our own hormone system.
To take it a step further, an intentional and interactive connection with nature can teach us about ourselves. It can be a somatic (body) mirror for our self exploration. When we attune in the present with what we see, smell, hear and feel in nature, it can reflect back to us our own state in body and mind. It will help us clarify what our body posture is saying about how we emotional feel...and perhaps what our pain can teach us so we can move through it.
If you live in a city, that doesn't exclude you from this daily experience. There are trees, birds and sky that you can intentionally become aware of in a moment of pause and it can draw you more deeply within your own self-awareness.
As living creatures, we experience our physical environment through our body. Yet this present awareness (in the body) can be an access point for using innate wisdom....what I would refer to as intuition. And nature can be a profound tool for discovering this. And what is this intuitive information good for? For finding your way to moving better, choosing better and loving better...to name a few.
It takes learning how to connect in this way and then the choice to continually do so. It's a facilitating practice to transition out of old painful patterns to those that help you thrive. Since I started adding these nature practices several years ago, the feedback from clients has been nothing short of astounding.
