From what I see, the upper back in humans has a tendency to tighten down...quite a lot. This section of the thoracic spine (in between the shoulder blades), can hold a tense posture that most often is rounded and held stuck in this position. The thoracic spine (T-spine for short) does attach to our ribcage rather than being free from these bony attachments like the lumbar and cervical spin. And thus there is an inherent smaller range of motion than the other 2 sections.
But even taking that into consideration, it's way over taute for most people. And the result of this does not support a healthy musculoskeletal system. A tight and misaligned T-spine will prevent full diaphragmatic breathing, chest flexibility, mobile and strong shoulders and a pain-free neck. It's a tense position that begins with or results in a contracted heart.
As I share with you always, a body in a state of contraction has an emotion connected with it that is yours to explore. If you are willing to connect to the present through feeling, you will have access to experiencing the emotional and physical state that's intertwined in creating your discomfort.
I will hold to my own experiences as well as those of my clients, that the diminished movement of this part of your anatomy relates to a challenge in the capacity of the heart. This capacity to feel openness, curiosity, kindness, trust, love, joy and the myriad of positive states, is enabled by moving and releasing blocks in your upper back.
Knowing the anatomy as I do, I understand how to guide you to gently and physically nudge into the blocks, while staying present to the emotion that helps you access the patterns stored deep in your subconscious brain space. And it's profoundly beneficial to do so, as it accesses the misalignment in the center that drives the behavior so it can be liberated.
If you become attuned to physical sensations and feeling within you, you can check the truth of this posture that you may hold. What does it feel like to try to lift the chest or turn and look over your shoulder. If you are limited in these movements, what is your experience of it? If it's not as far as you'd like to move, I think it's likely tied into an emotion that's contracting the heart. Can you tap into it?
As I've expressed many times, I love helping others in this way. It's my discovery of how profound body presence is in processing and transforming the way we behave, that motivates me to change my small corner of the world.
